Mount Rushmore, the subject of the artwork, is a national memorial located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Carved into the granite face of a mountain are the 60-foot high sculptures of four US presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, led the project from 1927 to 1941. The monument was intended to promote tourism in the region and has since become a symbol of the United States, attracting over 2 million visitors annually.
