Hassium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Hs and atomic number 108. Named after the German state of Hesse, it's a member of group 8, period 7 in the periodic table. Hassium was first synthesized in 1984 by a team of scientists led by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg at the Institute for Heavy Ion Research (Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung) in Darmstadt, Germany.
