Americium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Am and atomic number 95. It was first produced in 1944 by the group of Glenn T. Seaborg from Berkeley, California, at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago, as part of the United States' wartime Manhattan Project. Named after the continent of America, Americium is a silver-white metal that tarnishes slowly in air and is three times heavier than lead. While it has few uses outside of scientific research, it’s most widely known for its role in smoke detectors. However, due to its radioactivity, it needs to be handled with care in a laboratory setting.
